Dunmer

Dark Elf – or Dunmer, as they call themselves – are the native race of Morrowind.They are usually disliked and distrusted by the other races, They can be proud, ruthless and cruel. Dunmer are highly intelligent, strong and agile, making them both great warriors and mages. Legends says that they got their dark skin and red eyes after the old demi-gods in Tribunal (Vivec, Sotha Sil and Almalexia) killed the hero Nerevar. This made the Daedra Azura so angry that she made “their skin as black as the Ashlands and their eyes as red as their hearts.”

Some of the Dunmer still live in small clans where they live in accordiance to ancient customs, rituals and religions, disregarding the laws of the Empire and the Great Houses. Others live their lives in one of the Great Houses (which serves as political houses), where they are either working towards changing their way of life to meet the Imperial Empire, or they fight to live a traditional Dunmer life with their old customs. Due to the agreement with the Empire, Morrowind had slaves up until the time when Oblivion takes place. Only then is slavery abolished.
